Harvesting Wild Clay
Since July 2025 I’ve been spending about an hour per week digging up clay at the local river. This hour per week has gone a long way in terms of quality of life and mental health. While digging and transporting a bunch of clay is taxing work it is rewarding.
Once the clay is dug up and brought home a multi-day (sometimes week long) process of: cleaning, sifting, soaking, drying, and wedging begins before the clay is workable. I end up spending so much time with the clay, a connection has been formed, one so strong that by the time it comes out of the kiln no matter the state of the piece I find deep beauty in it.
